Ya'll, I'm
not myself this week. I am fortunate enough to get paid to
make people happy, but I'm still ME, and I am devastated
with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, and it's difficult
to pretend I'm happy. I have found it hard to smile when I'm
worried about the thousands who have lost everything. I have
watched the news recently, and it has brought me to tears.
I'm a little freaked out by all this, and I think to myself "what
I would have done if it was Texas who was hit?" I have
four animals that I adore and these girls are my inspiration.
What would I have done if I had to suddenly pack up my little
CRV with toys, treats, the litter box, my dog's leash, their
food and everything that goes with being a mom to three cats
and the world's most precious dog? Have you thought about what
YOU would have done? It shouldn't take a natural disaster to
make us realize what really matters to us. We are so blessed
and fortunate that it wasn't Texas. I must say that I am proud
of our city because the bulk of the refugees came to Houston.
Excellent taste, and with all kidding aside, I doubt they came
here to go to 6° or because they read the Queen of Clubs. Please
have some compassion to these evacuees and do what you can
to ease their sorrow. I've never, in all my more years than
I look like of life, seen something so horrible and it has
left a huge impact on me. I'm rattled.

A new star
is rising, and it is shining brightest on the city of Houston.
Launched just this April, MyCityRocks
HOUSTON (http://houston.mycityrocks.com)
has already grown to over 13,000 strong, and is creating quite
a buzz in the local scene. MyCityRocks HOUSTON connects its members
to exceptional events going on in the Houston community. MyCityRocks
is part of Cityrocket, Inc., a new venture designed to help people
enjoy their spirit for their city and their passion for the arts
and music. The organization is confident that Houston has the
potential to set a trend that other cities will follow. Cityrocket
CEO Cliff Kurtzman explains that "we chose Houston as the
first city in our network because it combines a great diversity
of talent with a large potential audience that is passionate
about their music and community. We are leveraging off of a new
concept in using the Internet to create a broad spectrum of positive
relationships that can really get people involved in rocking
their local scene." Kurtzman also describes how MyCityRocks
brings Houstonians into its network who are "hungry to always
keep learning and growing as a unique individuals. We look for
those with a strong creative fire, and who march to the beat
of their own drummer, not whatever happens to be popular at the
time. We want to find those that live at least some parts of
their lives right up on the edge, that care about nature and
the environment, and that think globally, while also taking great
pride in what is unique and special about their local community." By
building on highly positive themes, and focusing on helping its
members represent their passion in their music and get involved
in the Houston community, MyCityRocks is rocketing into the Houston
scene.

Heard of
THE LIGHT? A gorgeous new venue in midtown recently opened
at 2315-B Bagby called the Light. I'll be visiting
as
soon as I can, and, judging from the web site it looks MAGNIFICENT
(www.lighthouston.com.) Being the "inquiring mind" I
am, I dug around and got some scoop on the Light from one of
the owners, Paul McHugh, who says The Light infuses a relaxed
environment and cool ambiance with a hip, high-energy lounge
that brings lounge culture to the next level in Houston. The
Light is an ideal socializing spot to relax and enjoy a fine
cocktail. The atmosphere encompasses the comfort of your favorite
rock-n-roll bar with the charm of your favorite laid-back lounge.
Guests can enjoy enticing cocktails while soaking in the hip,
sleek atmosphere. The professional staff provides exceptional
service while remaining low-key, allowing you and your guests
to be the highlight of the party. The Light will have its Grand
Opening on September 16th. The music is genre of many different
types, playing a lot of 80's music, some rock, some pop and some
stuff in between. You will hear everything from the Killers to
Madonna to your favorite 80's song. The crowd is the 25-40 year
old professional that loves the downtown/midtown area. That sounds
like the perfect recipe for success!
