Houston and its people are intimate, passionate, and diverse. It is the power of these qualities, which make Houston a COOL CITY. The passions of artists, chefs, philanthropists, business owners, and individuals have built a city of hidden gems that are right out in the open. When we read between the lines defined by the freeways we find a treasure map, with those gems waiting to be discovered. The new website and documentary, "Hot Town, Cool City" (currently in post-production), attempts to answer the question Why Houston? See www.hottowncoolcity.org to learn more. Thanks to Michael Coppens for telling me about the site.

LOCAL BAND OF THE WEEK: Savage Evolution (see www.myspace.com/savageevolution and www.savageevolution.com) will be performing at St. Pete's on July 29th. They are going to rock the house with their original music. Please stop by to see them on the 29th and add them as a friend on MySpace to receive their bulletins about upcoming shows.

NEWS IN THE BIZ: Five new places have opened downtown recently. They are Hiccups at 306 Main, Biddles at 308 Main, the Office at 310 Main and the old Cotton Exchange Bar has reopened with new owners and management. Leonard Bell, formerly of 6: Lounge is working for the Cotton Exchange, Lindsay Meabon and Mike Krohn are new servers at St. Pete's Dancing Marlin. The gorgeous Stacy Loomis is now also taking reservations for Epic, midtown's newest edition and of course she is still at Belvedere on Wednesdays. I can book your happy hours, holiday parties (it's not to early to book) birthdays and bachelor/bachelorette bashes at the Flat, see www.myspace.com/barflat (1701 Commonwealth.) The next Martini Mix-off is on August 3rd at St. Pete's. Kosmic Latte will be our band that night. Contact me if you wish to compete. This will be the last one downtown before the finals in November. The next mix-off will be in October in Cypress, Texas. Add me on MySpace, here are my links: www.myspace.com/houstonqueenofclubs and blog.myspace.com/houstonqueenofclubs. This Sunday is SUNDOWN at the Social (3730 Washington.)

JOB BOARD: The GRAB (809 Pierce) is always looking for DJ's and promoters. Call Blake at the Grab at 713-655-0707. The Office Bar and Lounge is searching for an in- house DJ for Thursday - Saturdays from 10:30PM to 2:00AM. Please contact Jheri at 713-987-7983 to apply. Must be able to mix and have a wide variety of musical selections. I have a resume bank should anyone need quality hospitality employees. I only refer people I know personally or I have worked with before.

RANDOM RAMBLINGS: KRBE fired Atom Smasher and Maria Todd and I think that is total b.s. The new morning show will begin on July 24th and I could not be any LESS interested in listening. For the most up-to-date in Indie (short for Independent if you don't know) entertainment in Houston and beyond, visit www.kattastic.com. Here's my pick for video of the week, sent to me by Denver Huffmeister of LoneStar Bar. It's a good one, click to view: www.youtube.com/watch?v=LwQnlZIAfg4&search=Funniest%20Line%20ever. I'm going to the circus this Friday with Nikki Johnson of Exotic Fantasies. I love the circus, damn it! See next paragraph for an exciting event you won't want to miss.

Visit www.myspace.com/thefantasygroup and the CEO, Nikki Johnson at www.myspace.com/pntyj. Nikki represents The Fantasy Group which is a Houston-based event planning company that is about to embark on a HUGE venture next year, The Exotic Fantasies Competition. The event will be held on June 14th-17th, 2007 at The Hyatt Regency in Downtown Houston. At the event 50 of the nation's hottest exotic dancers will be competing for their chance to win any portion of over $25,000.00 in cash prizes. The event is unique for SEVERAL reasons, 1) it's never been done in Houston, 2)the performer and their sponsor will get matching prizes, 3) there isn't another event like this in the U.S. right now. This isn't like the Exotic Dancer convention of Las Vegas, as there is no "convention", strictly a competition. This isn't the show at The Pink Pony in Atlanta, that event has only 24 performers competing. The Exotic Fantasies Competition has 50, that's right, FIFTY performers. There will be exclusive VIP treatment, multiple events and the hottest dancers in the industry. What more can a fan or a dancer ask for?
