The place to be this Saturday is at Level (412 Main Street) for a party presented by 77002 and Joy Wise that will be dubbed “Indepen-DANCE.” Get out your red, white, blue and groove while you dance to the fierce beats of DJ’s Brandon Silva, Bobby Bliss and Surain. Doors blast open at 9PM, with a $5 cover before 11PM and $10 cover the rest of the night.

80’s band, The Lost Boys who starred in a commercial for the “Don’t Mess With Texas” campaign will be playing on July 3rd and 4th at Pub Fiction (2303 Smith.) The owners of Pub Fiction have also opened Shot Bar at 2315 Bagby (formerly the Light) and the Queen’s watch always says the time is “shot o’clock.” Shot Bar is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday and get a preview before you visit at www.myspace.com/shotbar. To wind up your holiday weekend, join Pub Fiction for their Customer Appreciation Night every Sunday with free burgers and sausage on the patio from 6PM to 9PM and enjoy a movie on their patio at 9PM on Sundays.

It’s official, I am now a magazine journalist for the brand, spanking new Houston Sport and Scene. My first feature for them will appear in their premiere issue and a launch party is in the works to coincide with the issue’s release. Please pick up a copy when you see it and let me know what you think. I wrote about Sizzling Summer Sundays in Houston and my picks for where to go to play. Add Houston Sport and Scene on myspace at www.myspace.com/sportandscene.

SAVE THE DATE: Venue (719 Main Street) will host a Sophisticated Bitch Fashion Show on August 2nd. This promises to be an amazing event. I always thought Lenny Kravitz was sexy and when I met Sophisticated Bitch clothing designer, Jeff Taplin, I was like “Lenny who?” Jeff is as smokin’ hot as his clothing line and his shows (and clothes) are very exciting. I hosted one at one of my Fashion Face-offs at Deco and it was one of my best events ever. Jeff’s clothing designs are super-fly with a touch of Rock and Roll. Venue is a wildly popular mega-club downtown, owned by the same owners as the new Bam Bou (in the old Gatsby spot at 2450 University.)

Promoters and business owners, you may send me any information you’d like included in next month’s QOC to houston_queen_of_clubs@yahoo.com. I love getting your emails and feedback.

Do you have friends who might enjoy receiving the Queen of Clubs newsletter each month? Send them a quick email with this link cut and pasted in it so they can sign-up. It’s Summertime again and that means Mixers, Elixirs and IMAX at one of my favorite places in Houston that isn’t a bar, restaurant, lounge or club, The Museum of Natural Science. Every Friday (except the 4th of July) science mixes with social for fun from 6PM-10PM. Admission is $13 to museum members, $15 non-members and $30 for VIP entrance (which how I always roll, VIP style.) The party starts in the Grand Entry Hall where you can soak in an IMAX show or the sounds of a DJ and at 7PM you get to hang out with the Dinosaurs and dance to a live band. There is a cash bar. Next Friday’s band on July 11th is the Mambo Jazz Kings.

NEED A DJ? James Dixon is DJ Thumpa and he worked with me when I was Marketing Director at Slainte Irish Pub and the Ruby Room (509 Main.) Thumpa is now available for any venue. He is versatile in Hip-Hop, Reggae, Country, Top 40, etc. and he’ll release a new CD to this Summer. Contact him at myspace.com/djthumpa72 or view his ad at this link in the Houston Press’s backpage.com. DJ Thumpa has a great work ethic, positive attitude and is a crowd-pleaser. http://houston.backpage.com/MusicianWanted/club_dj_available/classifieds/ViewAd?oid=2120549

I have been waiting months for the “Red Bull Art of Can” which is a national exhibition featuring artwork in a variety of media that have one thing in common, they are all inspired by Red Bull or are crafted from Red Bull’s blue and silver cans. Sculptures, paintings, digital/graphic designs and various forms of mixed media will all be displayed. See further details and art from past exhibits at www.redbullartofcan.com. The 2008 Red Bull Art of Can Exhibition will be hosted July 11th-25th in a unique custom-designed art space at The Galleria. Houston is an internationally-recognized mecca of visual arts and our city will be the only place for the 2008 exhibit. Other U.S. cities that have hosted Red Bull Art of Can exhibits include Boston, Atlanta, Dallas, Minneapolis, Philadelphia and Chicago. Red Bull Art of Can began in Europe in 2000. Since then, exhibits have been hosted all over the world including Prague, Switzerland, London, Dublin, Dubai, Budapest, Vienna, Warsaw and Amsterdam.

The Queen’s June adventure was a whirlwind of fun. Nikki, Heide, Deana, Robin and myself did a girls’ night out for Teresa’s birthday. The evening started at El Patio in midtown at 2416 Brazos. Being that I work for the best Mexican restaurant in the city, Cyclone Anaya’s (309 Gray,) I rarely eat at other Mexican restaurants, but the atmosphere at El Patio was lively and fun and they actually take reservations on the weekends. Channel 2 newscaster, Owen Conflenti was at the table beside us (very handsome in person) and the place was packed. I wasn’t hungry but I did eat half of Heide’s chicken soft taco which was dry and not nearly as good as Cyclone Anaya’s chicken tacos al carbon. Overall, we had a magnificent time and our server, Miguel was excellent. From El Patio, under the guidance of Heide’s GPS, we jetted over to 1400 Bar and Grill at 1400 Shepherd, near I-10 to see and hear DJ Clear. DJ Clear is there every Saturday. 1400 is a really cool venue with a private event room, televisions inside and out, a full-service kitchen, mega-touch machines (I am addicted to the Chip Away game) and pool tables. One of my all-time favorite bartenders, Charles Garibay, of Power Tools and Sliders fame, works there when he isn’t working at 6th Street Bar and Grill in the Heights.

From 1400, Heide (who used to bartend at Power Tools and the old Stric-9 Lounge in Shepherd Plaza) decided we should pay a visit to her friend, the larger than life STAR-tender, Ethan, at Beer Island (2631 White Oak.) He is so awesome and totally adds so much personality to the place. I can see why this is one of Heide’s favorite hang-outs. Beer Island is a spot I definitely plan to visit more often. The evening was getting later and it was time for us to get me home but we managed to make one last stop at the Flat (1701 Commonwealth) for a Bud Light nightcap and some quick hugs and hellos to Chris Lawless who rocks the bar at the Flat on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. In summary, it was a perfect evening with good friends and good times.

Houston Single Source, a Queen of Clubs newsletter sponsor, is hosting an event on Friday, July 18th at The Black Swan in the Omni Hotel (4 Riverway, off Woodway near 610.) What better way to combat these hot summer nights than to embrace the heat with a good band, mingling, dancing and drink specials? On July 18th you can get lost in the 'heat' of the moment as you dance the night away or just enjoy great conversation with hundreds of Houston Singles. The event is 6PM until 10PM and is free for HSS members and $15 for non-members. For more information or to RSVP, please visit www.HoustonSingleSource.com, email RSVP@HoustonSingleSource.com or call 713-630-0546.

Have you heard about the new Sunday destination at Soma (4820 Washington)? Soma is my favorite sushi spot and the décor is just as special. Their women’s room is gorgeous too. Sunday afternoons are called “Departures” and award-winning DJ Sun plays each Sunday from 4PM-8PM.

Another alternative for nightlife in midtown is The Tasting Room Lounge at 114 Gray. Wednesdays are bucket-o-beer night with 5 beers for $10. The TR also has happy hour every Monday through Friday from 4PM to 7PM, and on Saturdays, they offer $5 wine tastings from 5PM-7PM.
